What is Fire Safety?
Fire engineering, as outlined by the National Construction Code (NCC), allows buildings to be designed according to prescriptive requirements—known as the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS) Provisions—or through Performance Solutions. Fire engineering is crucial for ensuring building safety and compliance, applying scientific and engineering principles to protect people, property and the environment from fire risks. Fire engineers have a understanding of fire behavior in structures, including how fires develop and spread, their impact on building integrity, material under fire conditions, smoke movement, and occupant behavior. With this knowledge, effective fire safety strategies can be designed to align with functional building requirements, architectural goals, and cost-efficiency.
